Holiday Food and Toy Drive

Despite thick fog and near frigid temperatures, students and staff raised more than $9,300 during the annual Holiday Food and Toy Drive last Thursday and Friday. Special guest, Rhubarb from the Tacoma Rainiers, joined in the FUN-raising on Friday. The funds raised will go toward providing more than 175 Bates students and their families with meals and gifts this holiday season.

Patrick Brown, manager of student programs, notes, "Without everybody’s help, especially that of our fire service program, this event would not be able to impact as many students as it does," he says. "All of your actions continue to reinforce how much the faculty, staff and students at Bates care about the success and well being of our students."

The Associated Student Government contributed $5,000 toward the drive.

Get ready to package the food items!
Members of the Bates Acticities and Recognition Committee (BARC) will package the food and gift items on Saturday, Dec. 19 at 9 a.m. sharp! The college community is invited to help in this effort. Volunteers will meet at the IHOP Restaurant (7445 S. Hosmer St.) at 7:30 a.m.

Global Heritage Celebration a success

Students, staff and visitors watched a variety of martial arts in action at South Campus, Wednesday, Dec. 2. Three local martial arts organizations participated in this year's Global Heritage Celebration—one group with a few people, and another group with over a dozen. They explained the cultural history of their form of martial art and demonstrated it before an audience of nearly a hundred.

This year, the organizers offered a meal deal that couldn't be beat: sandwich and wraps for $1.

Martial Arts has been an event idea for many years. Kat Flores, diversity center coordinator, extends many thanks to Vlad Samoylenko, diversity center assistant, for his efforts in researching, contacting and coordinating the participation by the various organizations—and also to ASG and the facilities department for their support.

"It takes people to make any event successful," says Kat. "I want to acknowledge all the student volunteers who helped with the event, with a special thanks to Allen, Daniel, Jasmine, Jessica, Nigel, Prentiss, Ray, Toy and Will."

The next Global Heritage Celebration will be held in June 2010 at the Downtown Campus. To be part of the planning for the upcoming event, visit Kat and Vlad in the Diversity Center (E301), or contact them through their website at www.bates.ctc.edu/diversity.

Get ready for some holiday treats!

Stroll. Eat. Repeat. You’re invited to the annual Holiday Open House Friday, Dec. 11. Please feel free to drop by, grab a bite to eat and enjoy the season!

National Guard gets specialized training

Instructor Joe Toth recently taught a continuing education class to five members of the National Guard. Computer Network Infrastructure was specifically designed for people in the military.

"Some of the students recently returned from Iraq and shared plenty of photos and stories," says Joe. "Many of our service men and women have data communications experience. This class is designed to help them improve and hone their skills."

Way to go, Joe!
