What is an Educational Shadow?
What do you want to be when you grow up? This may seem like a simple question to adults who have a solid career direction. However, for many high school students, this question can permeate every junior or senior's mind. To help Pierce County students explore numerous distinct career options, they can participate in an educational shadow. An educational shadow offers a glimpse into the workplace so students can learn what a typical day would be like working in a specific job or industry.

So far this year, several high schools have participated in one day educational shadows at Bates. Earlier this month, both Graham-Kapowsin and Collins High Schools spent the day on campus to learn about careers.

On Wednesday, Feb. 2, Graham-Kapowsin students visited Software Development, Database Management & Development, Web Development, Dental Assisting, Fashion Construction & Design, Sheet Metal Technology, Audio/Sound Technology, Broadcasting & Video Production, Digital Media, Electrical Construction, Fire Service, Auto Body Rebuilding & Refinishing, Automotive Mechanic, Diesel & Heavy Equipment Mechanic and Commercial Truck Driving-Entry Level. The students said they enjoyed the hands-on learning experience. "I got to see how everything works," said one student. "I like that you can work and still have fun," wrote another on an evaluation. Students enjoyed meeting with instructors and students, they wrote.

On Thursday, Feb. 3, Collins students visited Administrative Office Assistant, Early Childhood Education/Child Care, Dental Assisting, Barber, Culinary Arts, Digital Media, Broadcasting & Video Production, Audio/Sound Technology, Biotechnology Lab Technician, Automotive Mechanic, Diesel & Heavy Equipment Mechanic and Electrical Construction. Again, this group of students boasted about how much they liked the hands-on activities. "All of the students were really outgoing and nice, including the instructor," said one student. "I liked that I got to observe the classrooms and see exactly what is done in the classroom," said another.

This program is open to any Pierce County high school. To learn more about educational shadows at Bates, call the outreach department, 253.680.7213. Special thanks to the instructors and students who participated in the educational shadows.
