Aerospace training unit comes to campus

AJAC's 53-foot mobile training unit will make a stop at Bates.
Did you know there are more than 650 aerospace companies in Washington State? And according to the Boeing Economic Contributions Summary, the state's aerospace industry represents nearly three of every 10 manufacturing jobs in Washington?

To highlight the industry's close ties with the Machinist program, the campus community can get a glimpse of what it's like to train for a job in the industry on Wednesday, May 25, 1-5 p.m., when Aerospace Joint Apprenticeship Committee (AJAC) opens up their mobile training unit for tours at the Downtown Campus on the corner of Altheimer and Ernest S. Brazill streets.

The 53-foot classroom on wheels travels across the state to provide hands-on apprenticeship and short-term training, and was developed in collaboration with those in the industry and educators to teach the manufacturing process, including product design, programming, testing, setup, machining, inspection and reporting. Visit the AJAC website to learn more about the mobile training unit.

Strategic Planning Council invites you to take survey

Bates' Strategic Planning Council has developed a survey about the new direction Bates is taking in its strategic planning and accreditation process. The content of this survey reflects more than two years of consultation and collaborative work to develop a new strategic planning framework for the college, and to prepare the college for the new accreditation expectations that come into force this year.

Your input is very important, and this framework will underpin all of Bates’ planning for the next several years. It will also influence other college priorities, including Bates' accreditation activities.

The survey will remain open until Friday, May 27 at 5 p.m.

If you have technical difficulties accessing the survey, please contact Summer Kenesson, 253.680.7204. Your contributions are kept anonymous unless you specifically request additional information on the last page of the survey.

All of the survey results will be compiled and presented to the Strategic Planning Council, where the council will finalize the core themes and begin to work on setting specific targets for each of the goals and outcomes. This work will then form the basis for the 2011-2014 Strategic Plan, and the first Accreditation Report under the new standards.

Thank you for taking the time to complete the survey, and for contributing to planning for the future at Bates!
