Tacoma Fire offers CERT training

Tacoma Fire Department invites citizens who live or work within the city limits of Tacoma to attend the next session of Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) classes Oct. 18-Nov. 5.

Aimed at preparing groups of citizens in our community to prepare for and respond to disasters, the classes will follow a model developed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and offered in cities across the United States.

The idea behind this model is to teach people in neighborhoods how to help each other in the first few minutes or hours following a disaster – before emergency responders are able to get to them to render professional help. In the classes, students will gain hands-on skills such as how to put out small fires, render first aid in a disaster situation, and perform light search and rescue.

Library Corner: Factoid, Safety Month

This factoid from the month of September only proves what we already knew: that our South and Downtown Campus libraries are very popular!

The combined libraries checked out 753 items (DVD’s, books, videos and equipment) and had a combined gate count of  5,921 customers.

Whew! Way to go, library staff!

October is Safety Month.  To mark the occasion, library staff have highlighted safety resources to help you stay safe on the job.

• Safety Resources Guide--links to a Safety Resources Guide for materials and videos on the library shelves as well as online.
• L&I Safety & Health Video Library & Resource Center--WA L&I has a lending library of safety and health videos. (They also have online videos!)

Disability Awareness Day: Focus on the Visual

A blind professional chef will speak on living with a visual impairment

On Wednesday, Oct. 12 from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m., Bates will “Focus on the Visual” at its 7th Annual Disability Awareness Day, held at the Downtown Campus Auditorium, 1101 S. Yakima Avenue in Tacoma.

The first blind graduate of the Western Culinary Institute in Portland, Ore., Jackie Cabrera will give a cooking demonstration and present on her experiences as a visually-impaired person in the field and in life. Cabrera, who was 29 when she lost her eyesight because of complications from diabetes, is now the chef and owner of C What’s Cookin’ Catering Company in Lacey.

In addition to Cabrera, representatives from the Washington State Department of Services for the Blind and Tacoma Area Coalition for Individuals with Disabilities (TACID) will be on hand to provide information about visual impairment and blindness.

“The annual Disability Awareness Day is designed to help people expand their understanding of the issues surrounding disabilities,” said Kathy Flores, ASG/diversity coordinator. “It also increases awareness of the celebrations and the challenges individuals with disabilities experience.”

Audience members can purchase two slices of pizza for $1 during the event while supplies last.
